Democratic U.S. Rep. David Obey’s unexpected retirement has thrust a conservative former cast member of MTV’s “The Real World” into position to capture a Wisconsin seat held by a leading liberal for four decades.

Though the Obama administration has stressed its involvement with the April 20 BP oil spill since “day one,” at least one Interior Department official decided instead to phone it in and go white water rafting in the Grand Canyon with his wife and other officials.

For nearly 36 years, a House seat in conservative southwestern Pennsylvania stayed in the hands of the Democrats for a single reason: Rep. John Murtha.  But three months ago, Murtha passed away at age 77. And now, with a special election set for May 18, Pennsylvania’s 12th District is up for grabs.
