Former US Ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley has decided to withdraw from the GOP Primary for US Senate and run for CT Governor. In recent weeks, current GOP Governor Jodi Rell announced she would not seek re-election, creating a large opening for a mainstream Republican to step up to run for the open seat. The Republican Lt. Governor Michael Fedele is also running for the seat; however, Foley’s connections make him a strong contender.
The US Senate race still has multiple Republicans in the primary, with real Republican Rob Simmons, a former Representative from CT, showing the strongest polling. The Senate race is an attempt to topple embattled Senator Chris Dodd, who has been linked to the insurance and mortgage scandals which rocked both Connecticut and the nation.
Like Simmons, Foley is a pro-choice Republican with common sense goals and a fiscally conservative background.
