The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office calculated that the legislation, written by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), would cost $829 billion by 2019.

Miami Herald (Miami, FL)

Democrat and former mayor Maurice Ferre, a Puerto Rican who served from 1973 to 1985, announced his candidacy Wednesday. The 74-year-old will challenge U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek in the Democratic primary, though he’s a longshot.

Democrats easily rebuffed another Republican attempt to remove Rep. Charles Rangel from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday. But there was a small sign of eroding support for the embattled New York Democrat: Mississippi’s two House Democrats voted against him.
