The Texas Governor’s race is heating up under the summer temperatures. Tuesday, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) announced on a radio show that she would be leaving office in October or November to campaign against current Governor Rick Perry in the Republican Primary if Perry continues to run for re-election. Perry is an extreme right-winger and has made some “interesting” statements in the last year- including calling for Texas to secede from the United States of America- but the race is expected to be close and contentious.
If is a special election in the fall for her Senate seat, it will be a hotly contested one. While Texas is a Republican stronghold- and KBH’s fellow Republican Senator from Texas is also the head of the NRSC- Democrats have been making inroads and would love to gain the seat. If they did, it would deliver a major blow to the NRSC and Senator Cornyn. Either way, it’s a potentially expensive race that could take a chunk of the money NRSC has raised for the important 2010 races. RRM will continue to follow this race on the blog.
